The following question is based on this passage.
Looking back at “futuristic” media from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, I am charmed by the blithe certainty that technology would advance along a relatively predictable track, ultimately freeing human beings from the onerous demands of labor. And whether it’s a futuristic utopia or dystopia that you’re envisioning, explored via comic book, film, novel, or TV show, nothing screams “future” like a flying car. In many ways the capabilities of our globalized digital information infrastructure have surpassed even the wildest imaginings of yesteryear’s techno-soothsayers, but this is one futuristic fantasy that has never gotten off the ground. Our cars may be more sleek and fuel efficient than in the recent past, but—aside from a few fanciful prototypes—they have not yet shed the bonds of gravity and taken to the sky.
