Interview
I. Academics
- What are DePauw University’s most popular majors?
Our top ten majors for international students are Biochemistry, Biology, Business Analytics, Communication, Computer Science, Economics, English (Writing), Global Health, Psychology, and Pre-Engineering.
- Do you emphasize theoretical or practical learning? Are classes mostly lectures, discussions, or labs?
DePauw coursework offers a blend of theoretical learning combined with hands-on, applied experience through discussion or lab work. Our liberal arts and interdisciplinary approaches help students think about the real-world implications of the ideas and knowledge they gain through their coursework, as well as practical skills that will be essential for their post-graduate professional careers.
Because of the intimate scale of DePauw coursework, true “lectures” are rare. Instead, DePauw emphasizes dynamic discussion-based courses balanced with opportunities to apply new skills in labs, through presentations, or with written assignments.
- Do you have a “common read” or other assigned reading for incoming freshmen?
For international students, the Office of International Student Affairs recommends the book “American Nations: The Story of 11 Rival Regional Cultures of North America” (by Colin Woodard). While we have not assigned a common read, we believe immersing yourself in American media by reading newspapers or watching TV will be very helpful for students’ transition to life in the United States.
II. Admission
- What does your ideal applicant look like?
Our ideal applicants are well-rounded and purpose-driven. We like to see students’ involvement beyond the classroom and within their communities. DePauw provides many opportunities for students to be involved in multiple activities on campus, so we believe that students who are driven to explore outside of their comfort zones will thrive at our school.
- How can students apply to DePauw? What part(s) of an application do you place particular importance on?
We use the Common Application and the Coalition Application and have our own DePauw Application. Applicants have the option to submit a supplemental essay. We use a holistic review at DePauw, meaning all aspects of the application are equally important.
III. Financial Aid
- Do you offer scholarships for international students? If so, are they awarded based on need or merit?
We offer merit-based and need-based scholarships for all international students. For Fall 2024, merit scholarships range up to $42,000 a year and are renewable for four years! International students are also eligible for the Bonner Scholarship and the Rector Scholarship.
International students can apply for need-based scholarships while filling out the Certification of Finances form. The financial package is awarded with the student’s acceptance letter.
- Are international students eligible for on-campus jobs? What about internships on and off campus?
Yes, international students are eligible for on-campus jobs. The Study Employment Award is included in the financial package for qualifying students.
International students are eligible for internships on and off campus. In fact, about 84% of our students complete at least one internship while studying at DePauw. Our international students often do internships during summer breaks in their home countries.
IV. Student Life
- What kinds of on-campus support are available to international students? Is there an ESL program?
Located at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of International Students Affairs (ISA) supports international students on campus. The ISA runs many programs throughout the academic year to support students including International Student Orientation, the Hoosier Hospitality Program, the Global Partners Exchange Program, International Education Week, and many more!
In addition, the ISA works with the DePauw International Student Association to support students and offer experiences like the Fall Chicago Trip, International Bazaar, and International Student Formal.
Also, DePauw’s English for Academic Purposes program helps international students across a range of proficiencies for written and spoken English. Speaking and Writing groups are offered throughout the year, as well as workshops on key skills for academic success.
- Are first-year international students required to live on campus? How do they spend their holidays?
Yes. International students—and all other students—are required to live on campus. Students are eligible to petition to live off campus for a narrow range of reasons after the completion of their first year.
Breaks on campus during the academic year include Fall Break (usually in October), Thanksgiving Break (in late November), Winter Break (between semesters), and Spring Break (usually in March). International students may choose to travel or stay on campus during these break periods.
Over the course of the academic year, there are many holidays that individual students may observe, from Tet and Lunar New Year to Holi and Diwali or Ramadan—and much more! International clubs and the Center for Student Life provide many opportunities to come together to celebrate religious or home country holidays.
- On that topic, what are DePauw’s most popular student clubs and organizations?
At DePauw, there are clubs for everyone, from professional organizations like International Students in Computer Sciences to sports clubs (Football, Volleyball, Badminton, etc.) to cultural clubs (J-Club, Korean Students Association, DePauw China Connection, etc.). The International Student Association hosts some of the biggest events on campus; last year, over 1,000 students attended the International Student Bazaar!
V. After Graduation
- How many of your students graduate with a four-year degree? Do they secure a job within the first year after their graduation? How many go on to graduate, law, or medical school?
Over 98% of DePauw students complete their degree requirements within four years. Two-thirds of our international students remain in the US after graduation. They either secure professional jobs in the US or admission to top graduate programs.
- What careers do your alumni pursue after graduation? Who are some of your notable alumni?
Overall, liberal arts graduates bring a unique blend of skills and perspectives that contribute to their success in a wide range of jobs and industries, from business and technology to education, healthcare, government, and beyond! Some of our notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Barbara Kingsolver; founder and CEO of Dianping.com, Zhang Tao; and Director of Wells Fargo & Co, Target, and Pfizer, Stephen Sanger.
VI. Other Questions
- How should students in middle school or the early years of high school prepare for applying to university?
I highly recommend students attend college fairs and meet with counselors during high school visits. Students should fill out the inquiry form when meeting with admission counselors to show demonstrated interest. Additionally, I recommend attending virtual information sessions or connecting with admission counselors to learn more about the school and see if the school is a good fit.
- Do you have any academic programs for high school students currently living abroad?
We do not currently have any programs for high school students. However, students are encouraged to visit our campus and attend admission events, including open houses. Students can schedule visits here .
- Why are you passionate about DePauw?
I am passionate about DePauw because it is my professional goal to elevate global education in uncommon destinations. DePauw, being located in Greencastle, is not often the first choice for many students due to its remote location. However, being in a rural location comes with hidden advantages! Because DePauw is 100% residential, all our students’ academic and social activities happen on campus. Most importantly, our international students come from all over the world and they require an inclusive environment with a strong support system.
I am proud of our DePauw community and its commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for students of all backgrounds.
