What is GCYS?
GCYS stands for Global Citizens Youth Summit and is an event held by the non-profit organization, Global Citizens Initiative (GCI). The objective of this event is to foster young minds to develop ideas in contributing to the global society for the future.
The event is hosted in the United States, at the Harvard Faculty Club and unites high school students from around the world with keen minds who have the potential to play an active role in the global society. These students spend eight (8) days together and discuss and debate about what it means to be a “global citizen” through the Harkness Method*.
Mr. Akihiro Takigawa
I spent my adolescent years in New York, however I returned to Japan when I was 14. I am currently a 2nd year at an all-boys high school.
I am the club leader of the Computer Club, and I have also instituted an English Debate Club at my school.
Ms. Sao Sugimoto
Sao is currently a 3rd year student at an all-girls private high school.
Even though Sao had never gone to an English speaking country prior to the GCYS, she is very active in collecting news and information from abroad. Sao’s eagerness in English learning has enabled for developing her English skills exponentially in a short period of time.
Hidehiko is a Y-SAPIX student and currently a 3rd year student at a national high school.
Hidehiko is an avid history buff, taking particular interest in the Chinese history of Ching dynasty. Although Hidehiko has never lived in a foreign country, he has passed the Level One English Proficiency Test. His English pronunciation is very much like those of native speakers and has received many awards in various English Speech Competitions and Contests.
I lived in New York until my first year of junior high school, and after my return to Japan, I enrolled in an all-girls private school. Currently, I am in the 3rd year of high school.
My special talent is classical ballet, and my hobby is Sado (Japanese tea ceremony). My extracurricular activities include participation in workshops for students from foreign countries and many other events.
