富山県 Toyama
Hi! Have you given or received any gifts on White Day? Our classes for the 2015 school year have concluded last Thursday, and we are looking forward to meeting new and existing students in April!Medicines, tulips, and mirages; these are all important keywords used to characterize Toyama Prefecture. Toyama medicine, prominent since the Edo period, utilizes a unique sales strategy called “Okigusuri”, where a full box of medicine is placed in each household and the pharmacists charge later for the amount of medicine the families used.
Tulips were originally produced as off-season crops in rice paddies of Tonami plain fields. However, Toyama now proudly holds the title of the largest production capacity of tulips in the country. During springtime, you can see a full field of tulips almost reminiscent of similar scenery in Holland. And for mirages, Uozu is a famous location for its stunning spring mirages, which occur from the cold water temperature of Toyama bay.
Toyama prefecture is also home to many delicacies. The plain fields of Toyama are one of the most prominent of those in Japan, and Toyama is blessed with such wonderful seafood delights that it is referred to as nature’s fish preserve. Transparent white shrimp, firefly squid (or the sparkling enope squid), yellowtail of the winter season, and red snow crab, all fresh, are local delights that cannot be found elsewhere. Toyama, blessed with captivating seasonal scenery and delectable foods is a wondrous place to visit.
